Paid High Cholesterol Clinical Trial Now Enrolling at Achieve Clinical Research near Birmingham, Alabama; Accepting M/F Patients with High Cholesterol Age 18 - 75

Birmingham, AL (PRWEB) January 22, 2014

*To see if you qualify for this High Cholesterol Clinical Trial in Alabama, visit Achieve Clinical Research on the web (http://www.achieveclinical.com/) or contact us directly at (205) 380-6434. There is no cost to participate, no insurance is required, and you may receive compensation for time and travel.

Study Design

This is an event driven, Phase 3 multi-center evaluation of the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of a new high cholesterol drug compared with placebo, in reducing the occurrence of major CV events in subjects at risk with LDL-C 70 mg/dL and less than 100 mg/dL or non-HDL-C 100 mg/dL and less than 130 mg/dL. After providing informed consent, there will be a screening visit followed by a run-in period of approximately 6 weeks, during which subjects will be assessed with respect to the trial enrollment criteria and initial compliance with the self administration of subcutaneous injections, followed by the treatment period, as illustrated in the study schematic below.

Duration of Study Participation

The trial is intended to complete when approximately 844 adjudicated and confirmed primary endpoint events have accrued after an approximate trial duration of 3.7 years.

Background & Rationale

This new form of high cholesterol medication works as a humanized monoclonal antibody against the proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin type 9 (PCSK9) enzyme responsible for the regulation of the low density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR), being developed for the following indications: (1) the treatment of primary hyperlipidemia or mixed dyslipidemia and (2) cardiovascular (CV) risk reduction, in subjects at high and very high risk of major cardiovascular events.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) due to atherosclerosis continues to be the leading single cause of death in industrialized countries. High serum lipid levels, and especially high low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels, have been demonstrated to strongly and directly correlate with cardiovascular disease risks by numerous epidemiological studies. Moreover, large prospective clinical outcome trials have demonstrated that lowering LDL-C decreases cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Despite the availability of lipid lowering therapies such as statins and ezetimibe, a significant percentage of subjects at high risk for CVD fail to reach or maintain their LDL-C treatment target (less than 100 mg/dL for subjects without pre-existing CVD and less than 70 mg/dL for subjects with preexisting CVD), due to insufficient efficacy, safety concerns with high doses of current lipid lowering drugs and poor subject compliance.

Primary Objectives

The primary objective of this clinical trial is to demonstrate the superior efficacy of this new high cholesterol drug compared to a placebo in reducing the risk of major CV events, a composite endpoint which includes adjudicated and confirmed CV death, non-fatal myocardial infarction (MI), non-fatal stroke and hospitalization for unstable angina needing urgent revascularization (as defined in Appendix 4) in subjects at high or very high risk of major CV events who are on maximally tolerated background lipid lowering treatment but have an LDL-C of 70 mg/dL and less than 100 mg/dL or non-high density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) 100 mg/dL and less than 130 mg/dL.

Inclusion Criteria

Subjects must meet all of the following inclusion criteria to be eligible for enrollment into the study, with the one exception, that for CV risk factors, subjects may be eligible for recruitment if they have had a prior CVD event, as described in criterion 6, or if they have a CVD risk equivalent with two additional risk factors, as described in criterion 7:

Evidence of a personally signed and dated informed consent document indicating that the subject (or a legal representative) has been informed of all pertinent aspects of the study.
Willing and able to comply with scheduled visits, treatment plan, laboratory tests, and other study procedures.
Age: men or women aged 18 years for those with a confirmed prior CVD event; or men at least than 55 years old, or women, at least 65 years old with a CVD risk equivalent.
Willing and able to self-administer or be administered sub-cutaneous injections of investigational product.
Must be treated with atorvastatin, rosuvastatin, or simvastatin, at the highest locally approved dose. If at a lower dose, there must be documentation that the subject is receiving a maximally tolerated dose of the aforementioned statins, or that the subject is at his or her LDL-C or non-HDL-C target; and no dose should be lower than atorvastatin 20 mg, rosuvastatin 20 mg, or simvastatin 40 mg, once a day.
Subjects on simvastatin 80 mg must have been on this dose for longer than 1 year before screening.
All subjects must be on a stable dose at least 6 weeks prior to screening. There should be no plans at the time of screening and randomization to modify the dose of statin for the duration of the trial.
Source records and case report form (CRF) documentation of the above, must be shown.
Qualifying CV risk factor: prior CVD event.
A prior CVD event must be documented by source documentation that includes an anonymized hospital discharge summary describing the qualifying index CVD event diagnosis or surgical event and that includes documentation of the event's date of occurrence.

Qualifying prior CVD event:

Greater than thirty days but no more than five years post prior myocardial infarction as defined by the universal definition of MI (excluding those with MI due to cocaine abuse or vasospasm) or ischemic stroke, as documented by hospital discharge summary and brain imaging scan
Greater than one year but no more than five years post previous cardiac revascularization including PCI or CABG, as documented by hospital discharge summary
Pre- existing arterial revascularization, documented as a carotid, or peripheral artery revascularization, as defined as surgery or stent placement and documented by hospital discharge summary (at least one month but no more than five years prior to screening)
Qualifying CV risk factor: CVD risk equivalent with two additional risk factors:
Type I or Type II diabetes mellitus, as defined per local diabetes guidelines and 55 years of age for men and 65 years of age for women, with at least two of the following additional risk factors for CVD:
Evidence of coronary artery stenoses of greater than 50% narrowing in at least two major coronary arteries as documented by coronary artery imaging;
Current cigarette smoking, defined as smoking for 30 days or more (any number of cigarettes) at the time of screening;
HDL-C less than 40 mg/dL as measured at the screening visit;
hs-CRP greater than 2.0 mg/L documented within one year of the screening visit;
A glomerular filtration rate (GFR) 30 and 60 mL/min/1.73m2 (based on the creatinine measured at the screening visit, and as calculated by the MDRD formula).
Subject must have an LDL-C 70 mg/dL and less than 100 mg/dL or non-HDL-C 100 mg/dL and less than 130 mg/dL at Visit 3.
Male and female subjects of childbearing potential must agree to use a highly effective method of contraception throughout the study and for at least 63 days after the last dose of assigned treatment. A subject is of childbearing potential if, in the opinion of the investigator, he/she is biologically capable of having children and is sexually active.
Female subjects who are not of childbearing potential should meet at least one of the following criteria:
Have undergone a documented hysterectomy and/or bilateral oophorectomy;
Have medically confirmed ovarian failure, or
Achieved post-menopausal status, defined as: cessation of regular menses for at least 12 consecutive months with no alternative pathological or physiological cause; and have a serum follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) level within the laboratory's reference range for postmenopausal females.

James Durbin - Kelley James

James Durbin – Kelley James
Event on 2014-01-26 20:00:00

James Durbin

The current musical climate is utterly dominated by pop music and hip-hop, with artists tapping into computers and software programs to craft songs. In the digital age, the information superhighway has made the ability to create music instant, if a bit inorganic. As a result, instrument-driven music like rock 'n' roll has taken a bit of a back seat. But what's popular in culture is always cyclical and if there is one man up for the task of bringing rock 'n' roll roaring back to the forefront, it's none other than James Durbin.

Pop culture watchers will recognize the name and the tagline. Durbin, 22, was known for "bringing heavy metal to the 'American Idol' stage" last season by performing Queen and Muse songs and then by singing onstage with metal legends Judas Priest during the final episodes. Durbin ultimately placed fourth on Season 10 of the ratings juggernaut, going that far due to his "rawk" edge, his unbridled emotion, his undeniable swagger, his powerhouse voice and his God-given talent, all of which meshed into a potent cocktail that allowed him to stand head and shoulders above a sea of pop singers. He was also rock music's crusader; there Durbin stood on the frontlines, navigating the murky pop landscape with aplomb and vigor. He emerged on the other side with his mission in tact: to bring rock to the forefront. Call Durbin rock music's 2012 revivalist and ambassador, because that's what he is.

At this point in his nascent but undoubtedly bright career, 'Idol' is fading into Durbin's rear view and was merely a launching pad for this musical force of nature. Durbin is ready for liftoff, armed with his Wind-Up Records debut Memories of a Beautiful Disaster, which is an intricate lattice of all factions and facets of rock. The singer has a singular focus and a noble goal and that's to have you standing on your feet, pumping your first in the air and rocking the hell out for every minute of his concert.

Durbin's debut album siphons inspiration from the music of the '80s and '90s, but it's never overly glammy, gimmicky, or throwbacky. He gives this time-honored sound a modern update, thanks to his youthful, impassioned flair.

"I tried to make the album as much like a real, live experience as possible," Durbin says. "You can't get everything from a live show onto an album, so I want people to enjoy the album and then come see the show. [The album] is built on so much pent up frustration, anxiety and excitement that I want to deliver it live and in person. I want people at my shows to be standing the whole time. For every rock show I've been to, I've been on my feet. I want my fans to get up on theirs, too!" It's a noble goal and the music contained within Memories of a Beautiful Disaster should find fans obliging Durbin's desire!

The stage is where fans will find James Durbin in his most natural state, as he (and his songs) truly come to life in that atmosphere. But on Memories of a Beautiful Disaster, Durbin has effectively captured his firecracker live energy. You can feel the adrenaline coursing through the veins of songs like album opener "Higher Than Heaven," which is a rowdy, riffy number that positions itself as the "get it out of the way" song. All the heavy artillery present in the song quickly alerts the listener of Durbin's intentions: that he is here and he's ready to rock. You'll be hit with that same pulsating energy on the soaring "All I Want" or even the power ballad "Love in Ruins," which is infused with Durbin's confidence and a Steven Tyler circa "Dude Looks Like a Lady" scream.

When it came down to creating his first album, Durbin approached the project unapologetically, revealing, "I didn't want to make something that was straightforward the entire time or one lane. I wanted it to have lots of depth and to be a timeless classic." With a few listens to Memories of a Beautiful Disaster, it's obvious that the mission was more than accomplished, as Durbin has turned out an album full of moods, tempos and tones. He continues, "It's my take on rock, which is all about having a good time. It's who I am and what I listen to."

Durbin, who suffers from both Aspberger's Syndrome and Tourette's Syndrome but refuses to be sidelined by either of those medical hurdles, co-wrote five of the 11 songs on the standard edition of Memories of a Beautiful Disaster, and was afforded the dream come true scenario of working with his favorite band (that'd be Swedish cult heroes Hardcore Superstar) and with a guitar god (that'd be Mötley Crüe's Mick Mars) on "Outcast." He also wrote with several seasoned songwriters and it was a sink or swim scenario, as writing his own songs was something the singer had never done before. Judging by his co-writes on Memories…, Durbin was doing a backstroke by the end of the process! He says, "I had never written with other writers, so it was a cool, neat way to find out that I have that talent." His fellow writers were like the spark plugs that jumpstarted his newfound creativity and confidence in this realm.

Durbin reveals that doing co-writes with professional songwriters also afforded him the opportunity to assert his voice, saying, "They want you to shine, so they give you a lot of freedom to do just that, and it's a group effort." When he sat down with Marti Frederiksen and James Michael of Sixx: A.M. fame for the aforementioned "Higher Than Heaven," he explained the ideas in his head, to help lace the song (and ultimately, the album as a whole) with a personal, from the heart vibe. Durbin reveals that lyrically, the song "is about my life before I met Heidi, my fiancée. I was going on a downward spiral and was on a broken path. Then I met her and it lifted my spirits," and it's a confessional sentiment encased in a rowdy, balls out jam.

Additionally, when he set out to record songs for Memories of a Beautiful Disaster, Durbin admits he revisited the music of bands he loves, like My Chemical Romance and 30 Seconds to Mars, for inspiration, since he respects and admires each band's charismatic frontman. He distilled what he learned from them into his own wholly unique style which should help elevate him to the pantheon of memorable rock vocalists.

The album was recorded in serious crunch mode over a period of two to three weeks, but Durbin was unfazed by that pressure cooker scenario. "It worked out well for me, since I work best under pressure and stress," he explains. He also had a little intangible help from producer Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance,Daughtry, Motorhead), whom Durbin admits "made it so relaxing, there is no way I could get stressed."

With a batch of songs and support from his producer in the back of his jeans pocket, Durbin was able to get into the nitty gritty of the album, which meant taking songs he co-wrote or that were written for him and Durbin-izing them on mic. He was faced with the challenge of making these songs his own and imprinting them with his stamp. Like everything else, he dismantled this task, which often proves difficult for artists working on their first album, from the top down.

For example, the song "Everything Burns" was written by ex-Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody. Durbin heard the track in demo form and at that time, it existed as a duet between Moody and Avril Lavigne. He was captivated by the highs and lows of their voices, but was determined to make the song his own. "I stripped it down and made it so I could sing it by myself," Durbin recalls.

Overall, his favorite tune on the platter is "Right Behind You," since it's dramatic and has an acoustic intro, allowing for an explosion of dynamics. "I wanted the album to have depth and this song has depth," Durbin declares. The song "Love Me Bad," which is the album's first Top 40 single, is rich with lyrical imagery and shows off Durbin's ability to cross genres. It's the type of song that will appeal to music fans regardless of their personal preferences and showcases James' vocals exquisitely.

For "Outcast," the guitar-driven, '80s-inspired anthem he wrote with Mars and Hardcore Superstar, Durbin was bookended by two heroes. That's enough to make a mere mortal crumble, but this situation played to his strengths and was smack dab in his wheelhouse. Of working with Mars, he recalls, "I get in the studio, two seconds before he does. Then there's Mick Mars, with the brim of his hat pulled down, over his eyes, doing that walk that only Mick Mars can do. I loved watching him play his solo and do a similar pitch harmonic to 'Kickstart My Heart' on the song." Durbin really clicked with Mars, deeming him one of the sweetest people he's ever met.

When Durbin hooked up directly with Hardcore Superstar, it was a bit more unorthodox. "It was insane," Durbin remembers, sounding like a fanboy for a brief second, but hey, he's allowed! "I'm sitting there in a mall, in a Hot Topic somewhere on the East Coast, during the 'Idols Live!' tour and they are asking me on the phone, 'What kind of song do you want to write?' and asking me more about myself!" The end result is an old school, in-your-face fist pumper with a purposefully repetitive hook that reels you in and refuses to let go. It could be the next rock anthem for a generation of, well, outcasts, rock dudes and rock chicks.

On the flipside is a song like "May," a slower, more contemplative number. "Every word is important," Durbin emphasizes about that song's lyrics and cadence. For this particular song, the singer was inspired by those great singer-songwriters who put so much emotion into a real or fabricated story. The song forces Durbin to play a character and tell a tale via lyrics that make events feel as though they happened yesterday. "That happens with 'May,'" he says. "I got lost in singing it." Meanwhile, "Screaming," co-written by James and 'Idol' Season 7 winner David Cook, tackles a very topical issue and that's the epidemic of bullying that's rampant among the youth of the nation and something Durbin himself experienced. "There are a lot of songs that look at and deal with being bullied and singled out, and that's definitely one. We went at it with a 'Revenge of the Nerds' feel, but it's about how there is light at the end of the tunnel." Again, 'Screaming' could join 'Higher Than Heaven' and 'Outcast' as the rock anthems for the plugged in generation.

Album closer and first rock single, "Stand Up" is stadium-worthy and arena-ready, literally. It's been used by the NFL at games during the 2011 season, and it certainly has enough firepower to get adrenaline surging. It's one of those songs that begs to be worked out to, as well.

Overall, Memories of Beautiful Disaster is an audio document of Durbin's life as he's lived it, with a focus on rock with a capital "R."

"It's my first record, and I am figuring stuff out," he admits. "I am looking back on my life. Parts were disastrous, and there are some things I wished never happened. But I can look back and appreciate things that I once considered disasters as things of beauty. They make me who I am today. I'd never go back and change anything."

With that attitude, and the fact that he set the table for his career thanks to his 'American Idol' stint, Durbin's arsenal is fully stocked with all the necessary tools to fulfill his mission of bring back the rock! He is now ready to step on his own stage and is ready for his fans to stand with him. For the entire show, of course!

The magazine also features cigar reviews and ratings submitted by real smokers, and much more. Cigar Advisor Magazine has published a new article in this month’s feature section, entitled, "The Passionate Wine Collector: How and Why to Age Wine – Part 1." Written by wine connoisseur Larry Tepper, readers will discover just how much cigars and wine have in common when it comes to aging.

The article begins with the question, “Why age either?” Though both wine and cigars should be consumable-ready when they leave their respective factories, Mr. Tepper asserts that “both may carry a latent potential improvement factor that begs a degree of patience.”

Mr. Tepper also suggests that starting a wine collection the same way as a cigar collection. “If your selection turns out to be age-worthy, six months from now it will taste a lot better. And a year from now, when it really hits its stride, you'll be kicking yourself for not having purchased a case.” Moreover, he suggests that “if a wine interests you, buy three bottles, drink one now, and stash the other two for future ‘research.’”

Tasting intervals should average three to six months. “That time frame works pretty much quite as well with wines as it does with cigars…if you'd prefer to wait a year or two between tastings, that's okay too: it's discretionary on your part.” Mr. Tepper brings up another point that applies to both wine and cigars. “Sometimes the first bottle will hint that you ought to wait a little while longer before opening the next one.”

Mr. Tepper also encourages would-be wine collectors to get to know their wine merchant. If an aspiring wine enthusiast can’t decide whether a particular vintage qualifies as a “keeper,” he says the best bet is to ask the most knowledgeable person on wine in the store. “Cultivating a relationship with him or her is well worth the effort.”

Maxwell Smart Was Right
By JUDD MAGILNICK on 11.2.12 @ 6:07AM — November 2012

Islamism and Leftism may just be frenemies — but behind them lurks "KAOS."

spectator.org/archives/2012/11/02/maxwell-smart-was-right

It’s a puzzlement: Why do leftists tolerate radical Islam? Begging the question: What does the man who Newsweek’s cover declared is "the first gay president" think is going to happen once sharia comes to his zip code?

Great minds are flummoxed by the attraction of two seeming political opposites. Even the late, brilliant cynic Christopher Hitchens was surprised and stunned by the blasé 1989 response of his leftist then-pals to the Salman Rushdie fatwa. Lesser minds on the left try to justify the wacky attraction by viewing global jihad as primarily a violent spasm of the economically exploited. If not brothers, these Islamists must at least be their cousins in arms. University leftists comfortably ignore that "religious" motivation of fatwas, sharia, or honor killings because, in their world, everyone who’s educated knows that religion doesn’t exist.

No fan of the left, Newt Gingrich offers an alternate psychiatric solution, suggesting that the current president "has almost a psychological need to be totally blind to the realities of Islamic extremism…. as though he has a desperate need to believe in something which is totally false."

For those still not satisfied with an understanding of the leftist/Islamist cohabitation, dozens of alternative theories have sprung up (see hashtags "secret Muslim", "Saudi money," "Indonesian birth certificate").

Irrespective of whether any or all are true, these storylines have been unflinchingly driven against media ridicule and elite indifference by people trying to solve the Islam/leftism riddle. They look for that one hidden secret that will explain it all, much like the last page of an Agatha Christie story.

In the midst of our existential battle of civilizations, these conventional assessments of the Islam/Left dynamic are worse than facile or inadequate — they are dangerous. To make progress and crash flawed paradigms, we are well-served by the terminology if not the insight of one of the sixties’ less-heralded geopolitical strategists. We need to place both leftism and Islamism in a superset best called "KAOS".

Why KAOS? Readers of a certain age will remember Get Smart, a ’60s sitcom send-up of the cold war spy thrillers. Maxwell Smart was the American agent who assessed all threats to the country by unerringly telling his chief, "I think that KAOS is behind this." And, unerringly, he was right. Only a higher theory such as KAOS explains why two systems — mortal enemies by conventional metrics — can be working in covert tandem, often intuitively, with no strategic plan.

KAOS is neither an ideology nor a religion. It is a pagan — or at best pan-phenomenalistic liberation movement that seeks to release themselves and everyone else from the bonds of time, physics, and biology. As two congruent, malignant light beams refracting off reality at different angles, they measure success by their intellectual and physical deconstruction of Western Civilization.

Stripping away the flamboyant dross of "Allahu Akbar" and "power to the people," it becomes clear that all KAOS shares the same vital principals:

• Surrender to passion

KAOS is a cover for lusts. Passion rules the left, underlined by their affection for the color red. Cyclically, they mass and charge the barricades to lust, namely: family, religion, and the free market economy. Islamist lusts are served by defining their cravings as divine will. We all know how when a "religious" terrorist yields to the temptations of the flesh, it is termed "incongruous" or "schizophrenic." But that misses the point: in their zeal to slaughter, they eroticize violence and feed the same obsessions they seek in the strip clubs.

• Situational morality

To live in KAOS is to celebrate moral nullification. By releasing morality from its (Western) mooring, KAOS disqualifies failure. In prison, Islam offers a narrative to the felon that renders penitence and rehabilitation inoperative. And Marx says that if laws are tools of the ruling class, then breaking them is okay. Protections such as private property, voting, and citizenship are to be enforced only to the extent that they advance a known agenda.

• An attack on meaning

They’ll tell you that it’s all about a great, far off goal — but their behavior betrays their eschatology. There is never a meaningful arc of progress. Their goals are a sham — their interest is in an eternal present. Their perceived triumph comes from merely participating in this never-ending struggle. See H.R. Clinton’s senior thesis "There Is Only the Fight." Or the German book called "My Struggle" that ignited a war.

In the ahistorical environment of KAOS, there is no cause and effect — none of the empirical reasoning upon which Western Civilization rests. For us, "meaning" derives from our axiom of an ordered, non-random, time-based universe. Everything is built on that — from the patriarch Abraham discovering monotheism to Isaac Newton discovering science. In KAOS, meaning as we know it is an uninteresting and useless construct.

They are Western Civilization’s Lex Luther — an enemy of near-equal genius committed to a polar opposite set of principals and outcomes. Defeating them requires one core insight into the paradox: KAOS, the avatars of randomness, lust and nihilism, are ultimately a rational — even ordered — lot. They are as predictable as the natural urges that enslave them.

We have their number. All we need now is a shoe phone.

LAS VEGAS — The future of privacy and the cloud occupied a sidestage at CES 2013 this morning, with one panelist comparing privacy lost to something else that can’t be replaced.

"Getting your privacy back is like getting your virginity back," said Jim Reavis, Executive Director of the non-profit Cloud Security Alliance, from a room on the second floor of Las Vegas Convention Center North building. The on-stage conversation between Reavis and other privacy experts focused mainly on desired changes to how to make the nebulous concept of online privacy more user-friendly.

Sid Stamm, lead privacy engineer for Mozilla, suggested that just because more and more data is being hosted remotely, "in the cloud," that doesn’t mean that it’s automatically less safe. "If we introduce transparency, we can make people feel safer about where their data is being stored," he said.

He also said that he thought that developers have to start matching data and privacy management to user expectation. "We should be engineering products which only do what [end-users] expect them to do. It may be harder, but it’s in our best interests," he said.

All four panelists — a group that included Rip Gerber, the CEO of Locaid Technologies and K. Scott Morrison, CTO of Layer 7 Technologies — agreed that not enough was being done to protect the privacy of the individual. That’s not exactly a revolutionary sentiment in the age of regular database breaches on improperly secured servers, although each panelist suggested slightly different fixes.

Morrison noted a common problem with applying desktop privacy norms to the modern, mobile world. "It’s not reasonable to read a 50 page EULA on this thing," he said, holding up his iPhone. "I don’t know what better transparency looks like, but we’re getting closer to it."

Gerber, clad in a leather jacket despite the overly warm room, explained some of his company’s approach to customer privacy. "We follow three basic tenets: You have to ask permission (from the user before collecting their data), you have to notify (the user when you plan on doing something with their data), and you have to offer more control (over the data to the user)."
The panelists also addressed what they saw coming for privacy in the next year. "One thing we can bet on happening this year is acceleration in innovation," said Stamm. "I think we’re going to see more innovation in privacy. We’re going to be empowering users to use their information."

Reavis offered a concrete solution, from his own company’s practices, called format-preserving encryption. "Entrepreneurs are encrypting information before it goes up to the cloud. It’s been wholly transformational, and prevents a company from seeing what’s on its own database."

Reavis was not wholly enthusiastic about the future, though. "It’s the bad guy’s Internet, they just let us use it because it suits their financial interests," he said grimly.

Stamm agreed that this was a precarious time for user protections and privacy. "The worst thing that could happen in the next year," he said, "would be a privacy breach that we don’t understand."

The Fall of Man - Will Women Replace Our Fallen Politicians?

Due to American men’s stubborn and sometimes indecisive behavior, are we facing the fall of man and the uprising of woman?

Washington can’t get their act together. Ted Cruz resembles Alabama’s George Wallace. Paul Ryan is silent, a strong contradiction to his earlier debates on the Affordable Health Care Act (“Obamacare”) and anything else associated with his President of these United States. Rand Paul looks sedated. Who beat him into submission, I wonder. Kentucky’s Mitch McConnell–well, nothing will ever please Mr. McConnell. And Senator John McCain is upset with all of them, and rightly so.

I’m looking for one man to step up and say, “I have changed my position. This fight is going nowhere and it’s hurting the American people.” But men can’t do that. They are so prideful that each one is searching for an amicable way out of this fiasco so they don’t look so bad. Too late! Our governmental system has been trashed and railroaded by bull-headed leadership. They all resemble a stubborn child who refuses to say “I’m sorry.” Matter of fact, I challenge the head of both political parties to call a press conference and voice their apologies to the American people. If they don’t…

Put a woman in charge! Hillary Clinton will run for the 2016 presidential election, and win (I predict). But Hillary Clinton’s potential leadership of the free world won’t break new ground. There are a host of courageous women in charge of this planet. Cristina Fernández de Kirchner is president of Argentina. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, is perhaps the most influential female politician. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, a black female, is president of Liberia. I could name nine other Top Female Leaders Around the World[1], but you get the point.

As you can see, these women have the most prestigious positions imaginable. This article is not intended to rate the efficiency in which these women officiate their political responsibilities, but rather to expose the growing trend around the world of the “changing of the guard,” so to speak.

Why is this happening?

Our politicians are throwing tantrums and squabbling as school children. Their bickering is bloodier than an L.A. drive-by. They are politically posturing themselves out of a job. Who ever heard of a bunch of well-educated men debating over a law they lost in the Supreme Court? (If I were an Ivy League representative, I’d beg each politician to please not list the institution on their resume.) Their threat to repeal Obamacare, fight to defund the government, and put families at financial risk seems foolish. Who, in their right mind, ignores the possibilities that our soldiers’ families will not receive their death benefits? They were warned. Yet, they chose to disrupt America’s freedom, security, soldiers’ pay, veterans’ benefits, and worry the elderly, all because they want to derail Barak Obama’s presidency.

Please tell me we don’t have human beings in our governmental system that would collectively allow themselves to be so wrapped up in hatred that they would ruin our financial stability and threaten our political standing among nations.

Do you know what that’s called? Selfish!

Women are sometimes mischaracterized as weak and too emotional. Well, if you ask me, this is a subject that warrants emotions. When it was time for men to step up to the plate and expose their concerns for the American people and act on it–what did they do?–they proudly stood firm to shut down the government. Totally out of touch, they ended up approaching our governmental issues as if they were trying to win a heated argument with their wives over their household budget. What dogmania!

American voters are so angry with Washington that most are determined to vote every one of our politicians out of office, replacing them with new blood. Thing is, this new blood may be wearing a skirt and toting a kid on her hip. And don’t you dare think we can’t do it. We are excellent at juggling priorities. Procrastination isn’t in our vocabulary.

Women are paying attention, huddling, and building strategy with a keen awareness of the possibility they’re up next.

Men fail to realize women are very strategic, powerful, tenacious, persuasive, and possess a dangerous determination. These observant specimen will sit back and watch disloyalty and corruption with a quiet disdain, while men callously think their covert operations are being ignored. By the time men figure out they over-played their hand and should change their ways, women have already taken decisive action. Don’t believe me? Ask any man who has been served his divorce papers. He didn’t see it coming. And no matter how much he begs and pleads, it’s over!

That’s the way women are feeling about this political debacle. American politicians, beware. You are about to be served!

Men forget women have long memories, and they keep meticulous, mental records of wrong. This formula is about to become a reality: Men – GOP – Tea Party – Conservatives – Government Shutdown – Tot Standing at Zoo Gate – Soldiers’ Death Benefits + Hillary Clinton = Hillary Clinton in 2016.

You think President Obama got elected by the sheer will of man? Think again. Do you think the proposed rezoning of many of America’s voting districts will solve Republicans’ real underlying issues? Don’t underestimate the American people. They will crawl, hitchhike, bus, taxi, move to other districts if they have to, and stand in line for two days to vote in the next election.

Now don’t you think women should rule the world?

I’m an old-fashioned woman. I enjoy my husband being (or shall I say, acting as the) head of the household. But I suspect future households will be challenged over the leadership role in their homes. Women can make a man feel as if he is running things, when, in fact, she’s running the show. The funny thing about this dynamic relationship between a man and a woman is our men know they’re being wielded in directions they should have taken on their own. They also know they are awarded kudos for leadership skills which rightfully belong to their wives. It takes a great man to admit this. Believe me, not many do.

So, as the coming election year draws near and you’re looking around your state for a good leader, don’t ignore the shaved legs supporting a lipstick-wearing, baby-toting female. Similar to Deborah[2] in the bible (Judges 4-5), she might be our best option to strengthen our country. There’s something important to remember, though. If our men progress to the level of a Barak (an Israelite soldier who had misgivings about Deborah’s leadership), he may end up leading the army, but dishonored by the victory. I’m just saying…

Frequenting public restrooms is about as mundane a task as any. All people go through the motions: finding a stall, counting the scum-ridden floor tiles as they do their business and washing their hands with watery soap as they stare absent-mindedly into a vaguely opaque mirror before they carry on with their lives.

Add verbal assaults, possibilities of physical harassment and an overwhelming identity dissonance to that bathroom visit, and you've got the familiarly dreadful routine of a transgender individual.

"Speaking from personal experience, just going to the bathroom in public is incredibly stressful," FSU student Riley Navarrete said. "I'm female-bodied so whenever I need to use the bathroom, I feel like I have to use the women's one. It just makes me feel so uncomfortable. People look at me twice for going into a women's bathroom, and it makes me feel really terrible. For me, I can't even enter a bathroom without being looked at strangely."

Navarrete is gender neutral, meaning they do not identify with any concrete gender binary. Under a trans umbrella, there is an entire population of individuals who do not identify with the gender that was assigned to them at birth. Navarrete is one of them.

"I don't relate strongly with either gender binary of male or female, and it really does suck sometimes. It's hard to get people to call me by my preferred pronouns, which are gender neutral," Navarrete said. "It sucks. I like wearing dresses sometimes, but just because I wear them it doesn't mean you can assume I'm a female, but people still do."

Navarrete prefers when people refer to them using the gender-neutral pronouns "they" or "them" instead of "he" or "she." While Navarrete maintains no specific gender, other transgender individuals also may identify with a gender different than what they were assigned at birth.

For Navarrete and all others who don't identify with their assigned gender, gender-neutral bathrooms are bathrooms available to people of all gender identities, not just specific to the gender identity one was assigned at birth based on their genitalia. The purpose is to create a sense of security for gender-queer, transgender, or gender-neutral individuals, who may feel out of place, harassed or unwelcome in exclusively male or female restrooms.

"It's a horrible whirlwind of guilt and angst," Navarrete said. "Going to the bathroom is a human need. It shouldn't be something that you're dreading to do."

Bread and Roses, a volunteer-operated co-op, provides this sense of safety to these individuals by having gender-neutral bathrooms in their store.

"We strive to create a welcoming environment where people, regardless of their gender identity, won't feel intimidated, discouraged or unsafe here," Bread and Roses volunteer Kirsten Harvey said. "We have an environment here free of hateful language, transphobia, homophobia, racism, sexism, ableism, and everything else. In order to achieve that, we create an atmosphere of inclusivity that reflects gender diversity and encourages acceptance."

While Bread and Roses and Sweat Pea Café are just a few places around Tallahassee that provide gender neutral bathrooms, the FSU PRIDE Executive Director Victoria Gentry said she is trying to implement some on FSU's campus by the end of this school year.

"A lot of transgender people come to Florida State from their hometowns where they've been put down their entire lives. They were never accepted, and might have even been beat up just for trying to be who they are," Gentry said. "If we can just get these bathrooms and keep going in the direction of inclusivity, we can make FSU a home away from the hostile home they've come from. We can allow them to simply be themselves, because a lot of people just have never been able to do that."

Gentry plans to start by implementing gender neutral restrooms in the Union, and she hopes to eventually make them available campus-wide. The plan will cost virtually no money since they are not looking to build new restrooms, but merely repurpose existing ones with new, gender-neutral signs.

"All the marriage equality debates going on has put us right in the spotlight," Gentry said. "People are aware of our issues, but our issues aren't only marriage equality, and people are starting to recognize that. Now is the time to strike for things to change."

Other campuses across the nation have progressed to include gender-neutral bathrooms as well, including New York University, Ohio University, and University of Colorado. The website safe2pee.org is also used to inform trans people of specific locations with gender-neutral bathrooms in their area.

"It's important to create a safe environment for transgender individuals because we live in this culture that can be so hateful. Our culture is so vehemently violent towards transgender people, not just physically, but in our attitudes," Jessica Schwartz said.
Schwartz identifies as cis-gendered, meaning she identifies with the gender identity assigned to her at birth; however, Schwartz said she does not agree with many of the stereotypes or norms she is expected to conform to as a woman.

"Even in mainstream culture, it seems like transphobia is a popular theme," Schwartz said. "Comedic films often make fun of transgender people, especially those who are sex workers. People just try to laugh it off as they're just men who dress like women, or vise versa, but there's so much more to it than that. They are used as a joke, a punching bag, something to laugh at. It's a one-dimensional portrayal rarely told through the eyes of actual transgender individuals."

The feeling of vulnerability in a public restroom and fear of harassment is not unfounded. The National Transgender Discrimination Survey, which researched gender non-conforming people of minority races, revealed that 65 percent of gender non-conforming individuals of a minority race experienced harassment, while 39 percent experienced physical assault. 56 percent of them have attempted suicide as a contributing result of harassment.

"It's providing a space for people to just freaking go to the bathroom," Navarrete said. "It's being able to pee without having to stress out about people staring at you weird, or feeling like you're betraying your own gender identity by going into a bathroom you can't identify with. "

To increase gender inclusivity, Navarrete encourages asking transgender individuals what pronouns they prefer to be referred to as, while Schwartz suggests that deconstructing gender norms and questioning these attitudes is conducive to acceptance.

"It's comfort. It's acceptance. It's feeling like you belong," Gentry said.

For 10 years, Gainesville indie-rock outfit Holopaw has been putting out music. First through the perennial indie label Sub Pop, and more recently via Misra Records.

The band dropped Academy Songs, Volume I earlier this year, which is an oddity in the era of the single track. It follows a loose story line that comes together as the albums plays on. Though, frontman John Orth admits to us that characters are often interchangeable and the ideas can be somewhat vague.

Orth and his bandmates will be performing Saturday at Gramps, their first trip to Miami in a few years. (The last time they were in the Magic City, the band was touring with then-labelmate Iron & Wine.)

We talked to Orth over the phone about Gainesville’s music scene, how being gay influences his music, and the ideas behind Holopaw’s new album.

New Times: How is Gainesville’s music scene these days?
John Orth: It’s good. Unfortunately, we don’t have a weekly or monthly paper. We’ve also never had college radio. Those are two coalescing forces I think our music scene is missing out on. That being said, there are always new things happening, and the scene that we do have is very supportive and vibrant. But, again, there isn’t a place that brings together the scene. There is a new group of kids, the Church of Holy Colors, that’s sort of the new generation of artists and musicians that are doing really exciting things in Gainesville right now.

As a gay man, how much does your sexual orientation influence your work?
It’s who I am and what I write about. It used to be that used to write a lot more metaphorically, because, it wasn’t so much that I wasn’t comfortable being gay…

Did you want to appeal to to a broader group of people?
It wasn’t so much that. My lyrics have always been pretty obtuse. I just became more and more comfortable within my personal life and what I was interested in artistically. It is the stories that I tell, much the way straight people do, it’s about relationships, love and sex. Anything R. Kelly would sing about, it just happens to be my point of view, which is a gay point of view.

Do you think gay artists’ visibility these days is important, especially with what’s happening in places like Russia?
Of course. To see your voice represented in the media or music, for people to be openly and proudly tell their stories, I do think it’s important.

You released a new album this year, Academy Songs, Volume I. What’s the idea behind it?
In the past, the way I’ve written songs, I’ve had notebooks with scraps and sketches of ideas. Some of those ideas were drawn directly my life, some of them were other stories I wanted to tell. More than anything, by framing all of these songs in one location with these characters was more of a songwriting device for me. I decide very vaguely what the story I wanted to tell, what the location would be, I decide what the characters would be like. Each of those stories I had a different notebook for, and I tried to flesh them out as best I could. In the end, I ended up with enough of those potential songs for at least two records. That’s what the Volume I implies.

You directed a video for the band recently. Is that something you enjoyed doing?
My ex-boyfriend is a video artist, and for years I collaborated with him on videos. This is the first video that I directed myself. It something I’m very interested in as a visual person. I’m working on a video right now with my friend Adam Baran, who is a filmmaker in New York, and a few weeks from from now we’ll shoot a music video for our song "Dirty Boots (He Don’t)." He’s going to direct it and I’m going to do some of the art direction and styling for it. It’s something I’d like to do more of.

I'd like to preface this, and all other subsequent articles on the issue, by stating my perspective. I was born a little Hispanic girl in Tampa. It didn't take me long after becoming a cognitively aware person to realize that I was a lesbian.

While I can relate to the trouble associated with deviating from heteronormativity, I will never be able to personally attest to the challenges faced by transgendered individuals. That being said, my best friend is a female-to-male transgendered individual–whom I'll refer to as Henry. It's with his blessing and concern that I would like to discuss what all of this actually means.

Unless you're a member, or an active ally, of the LGBT community, it's not uncommon to be confused about what it means to be transgendered. Transgendered individuals find their voices stifled by decades of misinformation, mislabeling of the community and a lack of legitimate representation in television and media. This results in relying on stereotypes to answer any questions that we may be afraid to ask. I'll start with the easiest one: What does it mean to be "transgendered?"

Transgender means an individual whose gender does not align with the one assigned to them at birth. A "transman" is a man who was assigned a female gender at birth, and a "transwoman" is a woman who was assigned a male gender at birth. You'll also see acronyms, such as FTM or MTF, to describe the individual.

Pronouns are important. If you can think back to grade school and recall the weeks spent on nouns, proper nouns and pronouns, you understand why it's so important to use them properly. So, which pronouns do you use, and when? Recently, there's been a case presented for using the "ze" pronoun, which is inclusive of all genders.

Even my most radically progressive friends don't have this implemented in their daily speech, so that's up to you. As for the average person, on an average day, here is my best advice: Call people by the pronouns they ask you to call them by. All the time. Always. End of discussion. Meaning, if someone you know has come out to you as a transman, call them by male pronouns. The same holds true for transwomen and female pronouns. It may be difficult to retrain your thoughts, especially if the individual is one that you've known for a while, but it's crucial. Imagine how difficult it is for the person in question and the respect for them should follow quickly after.

The lines may seem blurred when dealing with a "masculine," cis-gendered woman, or a "feminine" cis-gendered man. You may find yourself confused about which pronoun to use. How can you, the average person, go about your interaction as respectfully as possible? It's simple: Ask for their name. Transgendered individuals rarely keep their birth-given names, and adopt a name more suited for their identity.

Unless the name is gender-neutral—like Taylor, Alex, Casey etc.– their name should point you in the right direction. When all else fails, do the least amount of harm possible and use gender neutral pronouns.

Is it okay to ask which pronouns someone would like to be called by? Yes. Henry says he'd much rather be asked which pronouns he'd like to be called by than to be mis-gendered. If there's any ambiguity, don't be afraid to ask respectfully.

The most important thing is to have an awareness that we aren't all the same. If you haven't already, adopt a respect for anyone who deviates from classically perceived male or female traits and characteristics. We're just recently ready to discuss these things as a society, but that doesn't mean that they haven't been lying dormant since human beings became self-aware. As difficult as it is for a person who isn't a member of the transgender community to do, try to understand the courage that it takes to be true to one's self—especially when the self doesn't match the anatomy assigned at birth.

Adventurey, LLC Sponsored Obstacle Course Racing World Championships Announce New Qualifying Races

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 08, 2014

The Obstacle Course Racing World Championship (OCRWC), the world's first independent OCR championship, announced today three additional races through which participants can qualify for its inaugural event. Dirty Dozen Races and The Nuclear Race in the UK, as well as the Mud Masters race series in the Netherlands have been selected as qualifying events by OCRWC organizers.

“The OCRWC continues grow at an amazing pace with the support of many like-minded companies and individuals looking to take OCR to the next level," said OCRWC President Adrian Bijanada. "With enthusiastic community support, strong partnerships, and a deep bench of OCR professionals willing to work together for the betterment of the sport, the OCR World Championships are poised to be an incredible opportunity for Obstacle Course Racers everywhere to be part of history.”

Competitors in the OCRWC are required to qualify for competition by meeting finishing criteria in select obstacle course races, as determined by OCRWC organizers. The inclusion of these international events will allow for an increasingly diverse and competitive field of athletes on race day.

"Dirty Dozen Races is proud to have been selected as a qualifying event for the inaugural 2014 OCR World Championships," said Doug Spence, Co-Founder of Dirty Dozen which will feature qualifying spots for the Top 30 male and female finishers in their 12K or 18K distance events.

"Since we first read the OCRWC press release, we knew that Nuclear Races had to be part of the first independent Obstacle Race World Championships. We’re thrilled that over the past few weeks we’ve been able to talk with the team at OCRWC and secure our status as a qualifying race series," said James Parrish, Race Series Director at Nuclear Races.

"As OCR goes from strength to strength as a growing and developing sport, the OCRWC will help to give it the credibility it deserves and those that take part an even greater sense of achievement."

“These races exemplify excellence not only in their respective countries, but in Obstacle Course Racing as a sport. We couldn't be happier to offer their participants a chance to shine on a global stage,” said Bijanada.

The OCR World Championships, announced in December 2013, is the first truly independent championship event designed to celebrate the athletes in the burgeoning sport of obstacle course racing. The race will be held on October 25th & 26th, 2014 in Cincinnati, OH.
